A K Dolven’s work is underpinned by her reflection, both intellectual and intuitive, on the human condition. She tends to refer to actual sensory experiences that shed light on our understanding of today’s world, exploring the subtle and unconscious mechanisms used in perception, memory and emotion. The cry of a voice amongst mountains (please return, 2014), the stroke of a foot across a metal canvas (horizontal painting, 2014) or the complex journey of one human (A Other Teenager, 2016) over others is all an attempt at finding equilibrium in the contemporary space. Dolven’s art continually explores the importance of these gestures in social, political and cultural contexts.
Dolven’s works span the monumental and the minimal, the universal and the intimate. She is continually attempting to find balance between the human body and the landscapes in which she roams – whether London or Lofoten.
The artist’s work is not bound by a particular medium but explores the realms of painting, sculpture, video, text, film, photography, sound work and performance.
Interpersonal relations and interactions are central to her practice, and many of her performance-based works involve collaborations with other artists.
Working with the human body, human voices, natural objects and the environment deepens her understanding of their overlap and the minutiae of their gestures. History’s trace reveals itself in the use of found objects and voices: a rock with millions of years of narrative (Eventyrsteinen, 2014), the voices of townspeople (Bodø Voices 2014) or the sound of Arctic cod when they mate (echo echo, Berlin, 2015). Their contradictions, similarities and subtleties are explored through Dolven’s work.
A K Dolven has exhibited extensively internationally at a wide range of institutions and galleries such as Kunsthall Svalbard, Longyearbyen; Kunsthalle Bern; Philadephia Museum of Art; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; the IKON Gallery, Birmingham; South London Gallery; Platform China, Beijing; The National Museum of Art, Oslo; KIASMA, Helsinki; Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, Tromsø; and CCC Tours, France. She has been part of major group exhibitions such as 21st Century, Minsheng Art Museum (2016 Shanghai); Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (2016 Denmark); Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo (2015 Norway); Turner Contemporary (2015 UK); Neue Nationalgalerie (2006 Berlin); Tate Liverpool (2000 UK); the 6th Istanbul Biennale (1999 Turkey); and ICA (2004 UK). Her work is included in international private and public collections, among others Art Institute of Chicago, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and Sammlung Hoffmann and Sammlung Goetz, both in Germany.
In 1988, as a young artist, she introduced the idea of Artscape Nordland to Nordland County with its 45 municipalities. This was later curated by Maaretta Jaukkuri. Dolven received the Fred Thieler Prize in Berlin in 2000 and the Swedish Prince Eugen Medal for outstanding artistic achievements, in 2005.
